![]() ![]() It’s fairly well-known that a few years ago, Slootman put up a post on LinkedIn with the title “Amp It Up.” It generated so much buzz and requests for Frank’s time that he decided the best way to efficiently scale and share his thoughts on how to create high performing organizations was to publish a book. My first question to Slootman was: Why did you write this book and how the heck did you find time to do it? How does a busy and active CEO find time to write a business book? You’ll hear directly from Slootman himself with excerpts from my one on one conversation with him. ![]() Even if you have read it, in this Breaking Analysis we’ll dig deeper into the book and share some clarifying insights and unpublished nuances of Frank’s philosophy. I’ve read it several times and if you haven’t picked it up, you should. It’s called “Amp it Up: Leading for Hypergrowth by Raising Expectations, Increasing Urgency and Elevating Intensity.”Īt Snowflake Summit last month, I was invited to interview Frank on stage about his book. ![]() This is the fundamental premise of a hard hitting new book written by Frank Slootman, chief executive of Snowflake Inc., and published earlier this year. What you need is to immediately ratchet up expectations, energy, urgency and intensity. You don’t need a slew of consultants to tell you what to do. Organizations have considerable room to improve their performance without making expensive changes to their talent, structure or fundamental business model. ![]() ![]() In today’s liberal and anti-racist society, ‘going native’ is understandably considered a derogatory and offensive term. To take the nearest definition to hand – from the Queen’s University of Belfast’s “ Imperial Archive” – the concept of “going native” would erect an existential fortification for colonisers who found themselves besieged by alternative cultures: ![]() Once, one could found an empire upon the fear of “going native.” This originally prerogative term conveyed abandoning a civilised sensibility – one which would be at home anywhere in the empire – for a lesser and characteristically local subjectivity. “The Khan” explores the scrupulous diplomat’s deepest fear – that of “going native.” ![]() John William Wall wrote “ The Khan” in the spring of 1948, whilst stationed as the British Consul to Casablanca, and this story would be included in his first volume of fiction, Ringstones and Other Curious Tales (1951). I make allowances for Matheson because I enjoy so much of his work, but in the realm of time travel, I would prefer to see Finney’s legacy be the one to persist. It is not uncommon to charge Matheson with outright stealing of his premise from Jack Finney, just as his Hell House is accused of cribbing from Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. ![]() ![]() Time and Again was never filmed, but you’ll find many of its conceits in the movie Somewhere in Time, based on Richard Matheson’s Bid Time Return. The book was a big hit and remains beloved today, especially by New Yorkers who appreciate its researched and detailed journey back to 1880s Manhattan where a modern ad man slips back and finds his great love. Time and Again, published in 1970, is a novel length distillation of the time travel themes Jack Finney had been building shorts stories out of for the two decades prior. ![]() ![]() In this presentation he will explain the science behind Blue Mind and where this sits in 2020.ĭr. That is when things get crazy in her life. When Kayla blows the candles out of her big pink cake, she is disappointed: this wasn’t the party she wanted, and her best friend Nicole is too busy with her new boyfriend (and Kayla’s long-time crush) Ben. Without a doubt, Bryan Elsey is best known for co-creating the angsty teen drama Skins, both the inarguably superior UK original (2007-2013) and the ill-conceived, amusingly bad MTV remake (2011).
